about

The first time I heard Moonshiner was on Bob Dylan's bootleg series, and I think this version hews pretty close to his interpretation (the chords are slightly different and the final verse is a version from a Lomax book, though sometimes I sing Dylan's as well.) This is one of my favorite to sing and play because it really lets me get into a very sleepy, worn-down character, and I do try to give it my all with in performing true to that person.

lyrics

I've been a moonshiner for seventeen long years
I spent all of my money on whiskey and beers
I'll go to some hollow and set up my still
I'll make you a gallon for a two dollar bill

I'll go to some bar room and drink with my friends
no women to follow to see what I spends
god bless those pretty women, I wish they were mine
their breath smells as sweet as the dew on the vine

I'll eat when I'm hungry and drink when I'm dry
if moonshine don't kill me, I'll live till I die
god bless those moonshiners, I wish they were mine
Their breath smells as sweet as that good old moonshine
